Artist Statement
The art of Laura Vulgaris incorporates fine art, folk art and multiples. Working with acrylic paint on canvas, and with pen and ink on paper, she pulls her botanical subjects from the colorful world of Horticulture and re-imagines them over and over again in repeating compositions in black, white and greys. The paintings meld Impressionist and Expressionist styles with a stripped-down aesthetic. Wet-in-wet impasto painting technique seeks a balance between imposed order and the uncontrollable properties of paint. In contrast, the drawings and prints recall the singular linework of early botanical illustration. In calling attention to each medium’s distinct qualities, she centers painting as painting, and drawing as drawing.
